Join us Tuesday, June 3rd in the West Room as we welcome Isaiah Collier a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based saxophonist, composer, and bandleader celebrated for bridging spiritual jazz traditions with modern innovation. Described by DownBeat as creating “a vital piece of collective self-expression,” Collier is often compared to John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders for his intensity and depth.
He leads Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few, whose 2021 album Cosmic Transitions, recorded at Van Gelder Studio, received five stars from DownBeat and was praised as “a reverent yet fearless exploration.” In 2024, he released The Almighty, an ambitious double album blending jazz, classical, and spiritual sounds with his large ensemble, The Celestials.
Collier’s most recent work, The Story of 400 Years, is a 13-part suite chronicling Black American history. Premiered at the DuSable Museum, he described it as a work to “foster empathy… if you can’t get it from words, surely you can get it from music.”
Named Chicago Tribune’s 2024 Jazz Artist of the Year, Collier continues to shape the future of jazz while honoring its powerful past.
