The Coen Brothers' great LA comedy on a movie palace big screen. & if you get the pass, afterparty at Maude's apt upstairs-actual location!

Part of our Let’s Go Back to the Movies series

Saturday, August 1, 2026 , The Palace Theater

LOCATION: The Palace Theater, 630 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014 AND the 5th floor of the Palace Theater (Maude’s Apartment After Party)

730p THE BIG LEBOWSKI (wri & dir by Joel & Ethan Coen, w/ Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Universal, 117mns, USA,*35mm or digital)

*we are working hard to secure a 35mm print for this screening but please be prepared for a digital presentation if need be.

10p-1a AFTER PARTY IN MAUDE’S APARTMENT (if you buy the All-Dude Access Pass) For now, we’re capping capacity at 300, so get your All-Dude Access Pass tickets while ye may. Maude’s Apartment (where they shot the movie!) is directly above the Palace Theater accessible via stairs (4 flights) and two old time elevators (we’ll have operators all night). This is a 21+ party as we’ll be serving alcohol, food, art that has been commended as being strongly vaginal, music by Autobahn and other artists, fun surprises. The most important thing is we want the party to be a great time and very Dude just like the movie. The party starts at 10p and will wrap around 1a. This is a fundraiser for Secret Movie Club so attendees will pay for food, drink just like at a bar or restaurant. BUT we will work to keep things very affordable. We know most of us are more like the Dude and Walter and Donny than Jackie Treehorn. We know it’s the first and you’ll wait until the 10th or later to pay your rent to Marty. So don’t worry. We got your good time covered whatever your budget.

You can get tickets to just THE BIG LEBOWKSI movie or the All-Dude Access Pass (movie + after party, best deal). Early bird tickets through Sunday, July 26, 2026. Then "week of" ticket rates through Friday, July 31, 2026. Then day of rates. So the earlier you buy, the better the deal!

Please note that while we plan to screen the movie on 35mm, if we have any issues with the print, we will have DCP/digital back ups. The show must go on!

Sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude, in Los Angeles.

That’s right. As part of our “Let’s Go Back to the Movies” summer kick off to our 10th year season, we are screening one of the greatest movie of all time, the Coen Brothers’ THE BIG LEBOWSKI …

AND for 300 ticket holders who get the “All Dude Access Pass” an after party (10p-1a) just four flights above the historic Palace Movie Theater in Maude’s Apartment where they shot the movie! This after-party is meant to be very Dude so even though it’s a fundraiser for Secret Movie Club and folks will buy their food, drink just like at a bar, we’ll make sure the party is fun for all budgets (or lack thereof). More on that in a moment.

First, the Coens, often coming off a huge hit, use the opportunity to make a really strange quirky comedy. And it is often these comedies that sneak up on people over time as some of the greatest work the Coens have ever done.

After Blood Simple, the Coens made Raising Arizona. After No Country For Old Men, they cashed their chips in on the hugely hilarious and strange Burn After Reading.

And after Fargo, the Coens made what may be their greatest movie, the Raymond Chandler noir comedy riff The Big Lebowski.

Jeff Bridges and John Goodman (in what may be their best roles ever) play bowling buddies The Dude and Walter, respectively. Their third teammate Donny (Steve Buscemi, amazing) may actually be more dude than the dude but nobody seems to notice. He’s carrying the team.

Anyway, the Dude is a former hippie and current pot smoker, who gets his rug miterated upon by good looking but dim adult film stars who mistake him for The Big Lebowski, a very rich man with the same name. This sets in motion a series of strange events in which the Dude is asked to solve a mysterious abduction and his Vietnam vet buddy Walter decides to help, only to mess things up.

The Coens love their mystery literature and here they are having a blast using a Raymon Chandler type approach to Los Angeles’s laziest, strangest, yet kindest denizens.

Every line of this movie is quotable. Every scene is a bottomless gift that keeps on giving. No matter how many times you see it, you will ALWAYS notice something new.

Supposedly the Coen Brothers themselves are a bit weirded out at the huge phenomenon they have birthed that now counts annual conventions, books on philosophy, and constant gatherings. Which seems a bit un-dude.

But what matters most is that somehow they managed to write, direct, and get out nto the world a movie of such profound comedy and humanity that it is definitely a movie for its time and place. A movie that fits right in there.

For all of us native Los Angelinos and for those who now call the city their home, this movie is one of the greatest Valentine’s ever made.

Let’s watch it in a Los Angeles movie palace. Then let’s party at Maude’s surrounded by art that has been commended as being strongly vaginal.

FURTHER NOTE ON MAUDE’S AFTER PARTY: For now, we’re capping capacity at 300, so get your All-Dude Access Pass tickets while ye may.
