SPECIAL NOTE: We’re screening the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy in the opera house of Los Angeles cinemas-the Los Angeles Theater, built in 1931 by showman H.L. Gumbiner — with Charlie Chaplin himself putting up money to finish it in time to host the world premiere of City Lights, with Einstein in the audience.. We’ll have 1 hour intermissions between each movie so audiences can explore the theater, go down to an entire level we’re setting up with bars, food courts, music. This is a once in a lifetime experience, a mecca of cinema. We have a whole day planned of cinema, food, drink, trivia, tours, movie lore.

10a LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING When Peter Jackson and his team set out to make a movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s all time classic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings, they would end up going to Mordor and back just like the Fellowship.

The movies were all shot back to back to back, one of cinema’s biggest gambles, and it wasn’t until part of Fellowship screened at Cannes in 2001 that everyone involved realized the movies just might be huge hits.

Shot in New Zealand which is now synonymous with Middle Earth, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring like the first book tells the story of hobbits Frodo and loyal friend Sam who set out with the wizard Gandalf and ultimately a fellowship of elves, dwarves, humans, and hobbits to do the impossible: destroy the evil ring of power by dropping it in the volcanic pit of Mount Doom in the heart of the evil land of the dark lord, Sauron-Mordor.

The books for five decades were considered unfilmable as live action movies because of the sheer scale of the fantasy-horror-action-adventure nature of the material. Huge battles. Elven cities. Dwarf mines filled with primordial Balrog monsters.

Even more daunting was to keep focus on Tolkien’s story itself - how even the smallest of us, even a lone individual, with bravery and determination and help from a team, can fight the most powerful, darkest sources of evil.

Join us for the movie and trilogy that represents one of the zeniths of cinema craft. In the opera house of Los Angeles cinemas. As it was meant to be seen. An all day experience (if you stay for all three movies) that you will remember the rest of your life.

2p LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS The movie that may have the single greatest battle sequence in all of cinema, Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Two Towers delivers everything on all fronts.

Here we truly meet central tragic character Gollum (a revelatory Andy Serkis), one of the first CGI characters who fully worked as an emotional, captivating key character (sorry Jar-Jar). Gollum was one of the original keepers of the ring of power and it has turned him into a cave dwelling horrific monster who will hunt Frodo and Sam to get his hands back on the ring.

Here we get the splitting of the fellowship and incredible cross cut stories of Frodo and Sam making their way to the evil land of Mordor while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli chase the armies of evil.

Merry and Pippin encounter the ancients Ents, tree spirits, who sense time differently yet may make the pivotal difference in fighting evil.

It all builds to the battle of Helm’s Deep, a night time sequence where the Fellowship and humans must face literally an army of evil in the THOUSANDS. In the rain.

Nothing will prepare you for the sheer moviemaking bravura of this sequence, one of the greatest of all time.

Will the forces of evil get their hands on the ring of power and end the age of good and plunge the world into darkness? You may have to wait for that answer until…

6p LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

One of the greatest final films in all cinematic trilogies, The Return of the King shares the honor of having won the most Oscars (11) of all time with only Titanic and Ben-Hur.

At this point, Peter Jackson and his team had the reverse problem they had at the beginning before anyone had seen The Fellowship of the Ring. Now all the world had seen and loved The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Could Peter Jackson and company deliver a climax worthy or even better than what had come before?

The answer is a resounding yes. All the story threads weave together into a climactic tapestry where all is answered. . .for better or worse.

Frodo, Sam, and Gollum finally make it into Mordor though Gollum has planned treacheries to get his hands onto the ring.

Meanwhile the Fellowship must deal with the corrupt human leadership at Minas Tirith where the final battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil will meet.

And Sauron, the dark Lord, now knows someone is trying to destroy the ring of power. And puts all his resources and vast armies to destroying anyone or anything who dares try to enter his dark lands of Mordor.

It was always an impossible task for anyone, let alone creatures as small and humble as hobbits, to accomplish something so monumental.

So too was the making of this trilogy. Come see the climax to end all epic climaxes. In the opera house of Los Angeles cinemas.
