THIRDSDAY NITE #015 The Arch Stanton Quartet

The Van Dyck Music Club's Monthly LIVE JAZZ Show welcomes our friends the Arch Stanton Quartet to the Stockade!

Thirdsday Nite #015 features the Arch Stanton Quartet on Thursday, January 15th - live from the Van Dyck Music Club!

Longtime fixtures on the Capital Region jazz scene, the Arch Stanton Quartet performs original jazz that is experimental, yet rooted in bop and post-bop traditions.

In March 2013 the band was named Best Local Jazz Band in the Metroland Readers Poll and embarked on a jazz diplomacy tour of Egypt, performing at the Cairo Jazz Festival as well as performances and workshops sponsored by the educational organization AMIDEAST, the U.S. Embassy Cairo, and the Center for American Studies at the American University in Cairo. That same year, the band opened up for Charlie Hunter and Oleta Adams at the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival.

Drawing from their experiences in Egypt, the group, in October 2014, released a 9-song sophomore album on WEPA Records, Blues For Soli, which includes a suite of music directly influenced by their Egypt tour. In a review of the album for Metroland, Jeff Nania writes “This record serves to showcase the evolution of a local group’s compositional style as they continue to go beyond bop and incorporate further cultural influences into their sound.” Rudy Lu called Blues For Soli “A clear example of how jazz is absorbing other music.”

In 2016, the band had the distinct honor of opening up the second night of the Bridge Jazz Festival at the Massry Center in Albany, sharing the stage with the No BS! Brass Band, and Ellis and Delfeayo Marsalis.

In recent years, ASQ has been performing a suite of original compositions and readings inspired by Ralph Ellison’s novel “Invisible Man,” bringing this program to libraries throughout New York State. And in June 2025, ASQ was awarded an arts grant by Albany County, further cementing the band’s status as the Capital Region’s most literary jazz ensemble: the grant will support performances of a new suite of music based on the Paul Bowles’ novel “The Sheltering Sky.”
