Humans of Chocolate City is a Washington, D.C.–based storytelling project that documents the voices, faces, and lived experiences of residents who represent the city’s historic and cultural identity as “Chocolate City.” Inspired by the style of Humans of New York, the initiative focuses on capturing personal narratives from longtime community members, artists, and everyday people whose stories reflect the legacy of D.C. as the nation’s first majority-Black city. Through interviews, photographs, and shared accounts, Humans of Chocolate City serves as both a cultural archive and a celebration of the resilience, creativity, and heritage of Black Washingtonians, while also highlighting the changes brought on by gentrification and shifting demographics. Hosted at 702 Kennedy Street NW, the project connects with the area’s deep musical and artistic traditions, creating a space where storytelling, history, and community engagement intersect.
